THE FIVE FAMILIES

The Five Families refers to the five Italian-American organized crime families that operate out of New York. The Five Families have its roots with the immigration of Rocco Marchetti from Milan to the United States in 1896.

           THE FIVE FAMILIES

Though organized crime had existed prior to the establishment and growth of the Five Families, the power of modern-day crime families can be accredited to the overturn of the American-born gangsters by Milanese immigrant Rocco Marchetti.Born and raised in Milan, Rocco and his parents immigrated to the United States in 1896 in search of work. They settled down in Brooklyn, and for the first couple of months, the Marchettis were unsuccessful in securing jobs. Marchetti had also not been enrolled in school and he spent most of his time wandering around the city.Marchetti would befriend Jacob Kaufman, a Russian-born Jewish boy two years his junior. Though the two stuck together simply to keep trouble away from older gangsters, their similar hobbies in boxing and committing petty crimes (shoplifting, disorderly conduct) allowed a strong friendship to blossom between them. The Families trace their roots back to the meeting of Marchetti and Kaufman.

American-born Giuseppe DiLaurentis ran Mafia operations within New York prior to Marchetti and Kaufman's meeting. His faction did not contain but a singular Sicilian (Angelo "Rocket" Tappari), which Marchetti saw as a disgrace to the mob. In 1906, only 20 at the time, Marchetti decided to make a bid for DiLaurentis' control. With the help of Kaufman and a couple of his cousins (Irish and Italians), Marchetti managed to infiltrate DiLaurentis' gang as an associate. His job was to run numbers and surveillance, but he would also relay information back to Kaufman and his cousins. And while he had the abilities to rise through the ranks, he refused to take an oath.By mid-1907, DiLaurentis became suspicious of Marchetti, but by then, a plan was in place to take him out. On July 4th, 1907, Marchetti did not show up to his post. DiLaurentis sent soldiers, including Rocket Tappari, to Marchett's residence where they would be ambushed and killed by Kaufman. Marchetti was already on the way to DiLaurentis' manor with cousin Gabriele Lombardi.

By 1908, Marchetti had established his family as The crime family after his assassination of Giuseppe DiLaurentis. Rocco Marchetti was given the role of capo dei capi  (the boss of all bosses or THE GODFATHER) and the other four Families would soon follow suit. The Marchettis would dominate New York City as the wealthiest and most influential of the Five Families. They specialized in racketeering, murder, fraud, and extortion.Rocco Marchetti would be killed by a member of the Carusos via car bomb, which would lead to the 4-year war between them, effectively wiping out the Carusos as a whole. His eldest son Dante would become his successor as the Don of the Marchettis and the capo dei capi.

           WHAT IS...

CAPO DEI CAPI?

Literally translates to "the boss of all bosses". It is the name given to the current Don of the Marchetti family as the title only passes through them. Aka THE GODFATHER, the capo dei capi is the most powerful mobster in the entire American mafia and each Don of the other Five Families is required to pay him tribute. Orlando Caruso, the last Don of the Caruso family, failed to pay tribute to Dante, which led to his murder in 1941.

DON?

Leader of a single, particular crime family. Dons have complete authority over their family, only to be checked by the capo dei capi. It is not common for a Don to physically engage in murders or other violent crimes as he is the one that is responsible for giving orders and directing his family.

CONSIGLIERE?

Advisor to the Don. It is not required for a family to have a consigliere. They are the most privileged member after the Don, having the rights to question the Don's motives and challenge him if needed. They are considered to be the Don's most trusted confidant.

CAPOREGIME?

High-ranking made member of the mafia. Similar to a lieutenant in the military, capos are responsible for performing orders conducted by the Don by instructing a select number of soldiers and/or associates. They are usually the ones who have blood on their hands.
